- Alien Bees monolights have long been the secret weapon of photographers with tight budgets who want good, inexpensive studio lights. Paul Kepron’s review is well-written and to the point. He sums up the basics of the Alien Bees very well: compact, light, powerful and a lot of light for your money.

- Reading this review, many photographers will notice that AlienBees strobes aren’t really all that new anymore. The original strobe made by Paul C. Paul C. Buff AlienBees DigiBee 800 Flash Unit Review - Shutterbug

- I was sent a DigiBee 800 (DB800) to test. If you’re thinking this is an 800 Watt seconds (Ws) unit, you’re wrong. The DB800 is a 320 Ws unit, while the DB400 is 160 Ws. As an aside, the DB800 is $350 and the DB400 is $310, so unless you’re seriously strapped for cash I don’t see why you wouldn’t spend an extra $40 for double the power.

- This behavior is not specific to Alien Bees, but is found in the majority of studio strobes (some costing thousands of dollars). The Alien Bee modeling light is 150W incandescent. The Einstein is their high end light. It's 640 Ws, has full digital controls and varies intensity by stopping the flash mid-arc.
