- 1. As most of the answers explain - a good b&w lens was one that might have been not good enough for color. As a constructive side note - I had really good results on b&w with these: Similarities - both color and b&w are captured and observed the same way, so the imaqe quality factors are basically the same.

- Generally people say multicoated lenses best performance in color and single coated lenses are best for black and white. Now Voigtlander produce two different versions of the 40mm f/1.4, MC and SC. This second version was made for better performance with black and white. IMHO simply do not exist lenses for B&W and lenses for "Colour";)

- Single coated lenses are al little less contrasty. Uncoated lenses are the least contrasty. With the exception of completely uncoated lenses with more than 3 or 4 elements, the differences are minor provided you are not shooting with a light source in the frame or with side light glancing off the front element of the lens.
