2x Barlow for Astrophotography? - Beginning Deep Sky Imaging

- About the Barlow. Even "bright" DSOs are very dim, astrophotography is a constant struggle to pull a tiny signal from a sea of noise. The Barlow hurts (a lot) by reducing signal. So, any theoretical gains in resolution are outweighed by losses in signal to noise ratio.

- The magnification (the "x" in the barlow) is this effective focal length divided by the scope's normal focal length. The nice part of the Astronomy.net process is it will "blind solve" just about anything without needing any hints on focal length or resolution. It usually take less than 10 min. for the answer to pop up. fbutkovich likes this

- The Barlow has a hole on one end that will accept 1.25" eyepieces. On the other end it is just like an eyepiece. So where ever you stick an eyepiece you would stick the Barlow instead. Then use the 1.25" nose piece that came with the camera. The adapter you linked to should be exactly what you need. It makes sense to use a 1.25" Barlow.

- This gives you an estimate of how long you can take an exposure before star trails appear. It is calculated by taking 500 and dividing by your focal length. For example my telescope has a 1000mm focal length so for me: 500/1000 =0.5seconds. So I can only take a 1/2 second exposure before star trails appear.

- The A-P barlow will also work at magnifications between 1.8X and 2.5X with just a change in the camera spacing. In fact, most barlows can do this same trick, but the 2X and 4X Powermates work at fixed magnifications (i.e. they are pretty insensitive to their spacing, but 55mm is recommended).

- Barlow are mostly used in Planetary and Lunar astrophotography. With planets because you want to get more details on their surface, such as the bands in Jupiter, Mars ice caps, or the Cassini Division in Saturn’s ring system. Jupiter (top) and Saturn (bottom). - As noted above, Barlow lenses are used for astrophotography. If you are new to astrophotography, you may be wondering how to use Barlow lenses. For astrophotography, you need to get a T2 adapter for your camera. If you are using a planetary camera such as a ZWO ASI 120 MC, the adapter is included.

- Barlows allow you to keep the eye relief of the lower magnification eyepieces while still getting the magnification of the high powered ones. Standard fit. All Barlow lenses are made for the standard 1.25″ or 2″ barrel sizes. The same as your regular eyepieces. They’ll fit any telescope of the matching size. Cons Darker images.
