Canon 300mm F4L IS Lens for Astrophotography

- I've used my Canon 300mm f/4 L a few times for astrophotography, mainly the first few months starting out so my images probably weren't as good as they can be. On my astrobin account I have 2 images produced by that lens: A pretty short integration on the Witch's Head (49 minutes) Heart n Soul with the 300mm and UHC filter on unmodified canon 6D.

- Not too often do people use this lens for this purpose but the prospect of using Canon's top lens (according to the MTF charts) and shooting at f/2.8 instead of 5.6 or 8 or 10 made this a worthwhile endeavor. I am not disappointed! I have been using the 400/5.6L for astrophotography for a year now and am roundly pleased with it's performance.

- Canon EOS EF 300mm f/2.8 L USM IS Astrophotography Tests I have to admit, I was absolutely stunned at how poor the stellar images were in the new Canon 300mm f/2.8 L USM IS lens. Quite honestly flabbergasted. Canon 300mm f/2.8 Star images enlarged 500 percent. Note that the stars in the image above were taken from near the center of the field.
How can I do astrophotography with my 70-300mm lens?
- To do astrophotography with a 70-300mm lens using a film camera is a challenge, but is possible. One of the limiting factors is the speed of the film you use. In general you need a very fast speed film to do astrophotography, especially with longer focal lengths such as 300mm. This is because as the Earth rotates on its axis, the stars appear to move across the sky and they do …

- I was looking to get myself a Canon 75 - 300 mm Lens as a birthday present. I was told by a photographer that it is a great lens for animals and sports. Thinking as I am doing some low lever amateur astrophotography and thinking of the upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse next week I wanted to hear from you if you had any experience at all with the lens.
