- Shooting across or over sand, cement, rocks, water, snow and open fields when the air to ground temperature differential is more than 10 degrees (a bit arbitrary) will result in some distortion. 4. Shooting in bright sunlight over these grounds will often produce distortion (probably for the reason stated above).
atmospheric distortion - moon/sun horizon shots

- To my mind, atmospheric distortion is part of the appeal, and it's the way the Sun or Moon actually appear. Refraction at the horizon is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions, especially temperature, so almost no two rises or sets are the same. This, again, is part of Sun and Moon rise and set photography.

- June 5, 2022. If you’ve ever noticed a warped appearance in a photo, particularly in the corners, you saw distortion. In other words, distortion refers to a visual deformation of images. There are two types of distortion: optical and perspective. In photography, it’s important to know the difference between the two so that you can either ...

- I think other than picking a time with less turbulence (early morning) & reducing the amount of atmosphere you're shooting through, there's very little that can be done. With the moon at least you can take multiple shots & pick the results where distortion is least - this rarely works well for wildlife!

- The relationship between atmospheric density and index of refraction is given by the expression po=air density at sea level, p=air density at altitude in question. In analyzing the effect of atmospheric re fraction on an optical ray, it is convenient to consider that the atmosphere is comprised of a series of distinct layers whose boundaries
