Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 DG OS - BirdForum
- https://www.birdforum.net/threads/sigma-70-300-f4-5-6-dg-os.171090/
- My wife has the Canon 70-300 IS and whilst it is a good lens it doesn't quite cut it for birding (unless you deal with a lot of tame or big birds). Unlike the Sigmas you can use it at 300mm though and it's still quite sharp. This lens is not that much cheaper than a …
Is 300mm Enough for Wildlife and Bird Photography? (Answered)
- This 300mm lens is ideal for all Nikon DSLR cameras. It’s well-suited for wildlife photography, having enough zoom to get great detail on small, moving birds without being too bulky. This lens has a silent wave motor for fast autofocusing while allowing a manual override.
Photographing Wildlife with the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR
- https://photographylife.com/photographing-wildlife-with-the-nikon-70-300mm-f-4-5-5-6-vr
- It can be a very sharp lens with good light, static subjects, lower focal lengths, and its sweetest spot of f/8. The Nikon 70-300 creates some of the softest bokeh in its class, yielding good subject separation. The bokeh does look busy near the subject but gets creamier as the subject to background increases, as you can see in the below picture.

Sigma 70-300 vs Tamron 70-300 - BirdForum
- https://www.birdforum.net/threads/sigma-70-300-vs-tamron-70-300.81035/
- AFAIK the new Nikon 70-300mm VR is the only lens in that focal length range that will AF on the D40, and it's about £350. If you can get a D70s, I'd recommend it (if you're determined to stick with Nikon - Paul makes a good point about your dad!), or the D50 for less features but slightly better apparent high ISO performance.
Does anyone use a 70-300 mm for bird photography?
- Went bird watching for the first time today. Took a 24-120 mm Nikon lens. Left the 70-300 mm lens at home. That was probably a mistake. Looking forward to next weekend. Will try the 70-300 mm next weekend. Jim Edgar Park is 16,500 acres of lakes, ponds and forest. The perfect place for wildlife photography in Illinois.
