- The 40D is much better and a joy to use. Get an extended warranty if you can although some credit cards will tack on another year anyway. For bird photography I'd recommend at least an 8GB card with the 40D. Especially if you are using the 6fps option and the RAW file size is larger than on the 350D.

- I am an amateur wildlife photographer; still learning many things about the world of photography. The 100-400mm is a nice lens, i dont own one, rather I own the 400mm f/5.6L prime, it usually yields sharper results than the 100-400 at 400mm and is usually a little faster to focus, making it good for BIF (birds in flight).

- The 30D or 40D with a 1.6 crop will give you a better mag rate compared to a MkIII which is only a 1.3 crop. A 400mm lens with a 1.6 crop factor gives you 640mm focal length whereas a 1.3 crop factor gives you 520mm focal lens. In birding the longer the focal length the better which means less cropping.
