- The 55-250 certainly CAN take astrophotography photos, but the limiting factor will be motion blur (the Earth is turning relative to the stars/galaxies). The challenge you'll run into is that you need a long exposure to get enough light for individual galaxies, but can't use particularly long shutter speeds without getting blur/streaks of stars.
