Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Astrophotography Review
- https://www.lonelyspeck.com/canon-ef-50mm-f1-8-stm-astrophotography-review/
- As Canon’s cheapest prime lens, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is not Canon’s sharpest lens. We expected this going into the review but still wanted to see what could be done using such a cheap lens, especially in the context of astrophotography. For most general daytime shooting, I would recommend this lens in a heartbeat. For the …
Bad Lens for Astrophotography: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 …

- Brutal coma in Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. This defect causes this objective to be inappropriate for astrophotography at apertures close to f / 1.4, since the image fragment that remains without defects is very small. In order to prevent more …

Is the Canon EF 50 mm F1.8 worth it for Astrophotography?
- At 50mm you might not necessarily even need a star tracker. What targets do you ultimately want to photograph? I just got a 135mm vintage takumar lens for $40 which would give you a much longer FL and would be quite a bit cheaper. 135mm is still what I’d consider wide field for astrophotography.
Suitability of Canon 50mm f1.8 Lens for Astrophotography

- The 50mm f/1.8 is great, but you really do need to stop it down to at least f/4 if not lower to get the optics to work the best. Otherwise the coma is really dire. Yes at f/1.8 you let in some serious light, but you'll lost something like the outer 30-40% of the image.
Camera Lenses for Astrophotography

- Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM - lots of coma at f/1.4, ok at f/4 good at f/4.5 Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II - coma at f/1.8, ok at f/2.8, ... these lenses can't really be used on the new auto-focus EF camera bodies for astrophotography. When Canon redesigned their cameras and lenses for autofocus, they changed the distance from the lens flange to the ...

- Here is a photo of M31, 32, 110 and M33 plus the stars Alpheratz, Mirach and Almach taken with my new Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. Lens was stopped down to f/4 although f/2.8 looked pretty good, too. ISO 1600, 120 seconds unguided on an iOptron iEQ45 Pro. 29 lights, 20 darks, 40 flats, 40 dark flats. Processed with Nebulosity.

- My first post, so excuse my ignorance when it comes to cameras. I have a Rebel EOS T6 that came with a 18-55mm lens and a 75-300mm lens. I am interested in taking night-sky photos, particularly of stars/constellations. I am looking at both a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 autofocus lens and a Canon EF 50mm f/1/8 STF lens.
