- Elizabeth N. Smith (1846-1899) was the daughter of John J. and Georgianna Smith and the sister of photographer Hamilton Sutton Smith. Elizabeth began teaching at the Phillips School in Beacon Hill in the 1870s and was among the first African American teachers in an integrated Boston Public School.
