- If you say that "acceptably sharp" is blurred by not more than 1/1000 of the picture width, about 3-6 pixels, depending on your camera's resolution, and the field of view is 44m wide (fairly tight tight on the planes, but I don't know the exact lenth of the aircraft the Red Arrows are currently using), you'd need a shutter speed of 1/10000 of a second.

- Before the shoot (before the planes fly by), meter the sky, to see what shutter speeds are recommended, if it is slower than 1/150, then increase your iso and compensate a little at least. You should be shooting at over 1/250 to get the nice freeze.
