- IBIS is good for low light and hand held photos regardless of the lens used such as manual vintage lenses. The telephoto 2.8 lenses like a 70-200 and above have OSS. If you're taking low light handheld photos on your crop sensor then OSS lenses will help you. That's all I know. I'm sure IBIS and OSS probably help out with action photography as well.

- IBIS is not that important at higher shutter speeds. And it doesn't really help if the subject is moving. It's helpful at low shutter speeds and hand held shots. IBIS is sometimes considered more effective than OSS but any stabilization is better than none in the above use case. IMHO stabilization in general is a bit overrated.

- The neat thing about what @Derrel said, is with IBIS, you can stabilize OLD lenses. Example the Nikon 500/8 mirror lens from the 1970s, does NOT have stabilization. But put it on a camera with IBIS, and it is now a stabilized lens. I agree with @dunfly, technique and brace. It also depends on HOW you shake.

- IBIS is particularly useful if you want to shoot video as it can provide a very smooth image when moving with the camera. I am not interested in video here though as we are looking at the issue of IS from the still photographer’s point of view. The IBIS Myth. At the moment, nearly all the camera manufacturers are jumping on the IBIS bandwagon.

- The main reason why I use IBIS is indeed the ability to use prime lenses hand-held without needing to worry about shaky footage. If you have a lot of lenses with OIS and you film hand-held with a lot of camera movement I would not recommend using a camera that has IBIS. The double stabilization (OIS + IBIS) is going to avoid any sort of motion.
