On July 24, 2011, the Ely Stage Stop and Country Museum was opened to the public for the first time by the Lake County Historical Society and Lake County. It is located at 9921 Highway 281 (Soda Bay Road) between Kelseyville and Lower Lake.

The store was owned and operated by John Monroe "Jack" Hewitt Jr. And his wife, Hazel Harris Hewitt. Born in 1908, Jack Hewitt served in the Navy in World War II. Hazel was born in 1912.

A long-time friend who is also a long-time friend of Schminck Memorial Museum and Lake County Historical Society sent the manuscript from her new home in up in Washington state. It is the Hartzog – Nelson Family History researched and written by Bernice Forga in 2006.
