- Liquefy the photographic emulsion (any make will work I think) in a hot water bath and coat the wax plates with a smooth brush (less smooth and you will see even more brushstrokes). Coating is tricky as the emulsion is water based and so the wax naturally repels it. I found that you just have to keep brushing and eventually it begins to stick.
