Is a Meade LX200 10" the right choice for astrophotography?
- It's all to do with flat field of view and quality of mirrors - TAL make the 250K (Klevtsov) which is a 10" aperture with optional 1/10 wave mirror. I doubt any Meade or Celestron could match that for imaging given a serious mount (250K OTA weighs 16KG naked). The TAL 250K is available with an EQ6 Pro Synscan mount for around £2800.

- The LX200 is on a Meade super wedge that has been modified to reduce the slop in the RA and Dec adjustments. The scope had a 25" periodic error (PE) that I was able to reduce to +- 2" with PE correction. This is still too much for good images so I use an AO-8 to eliminate the remaining periodic error.

- I felt the following private post to me may reflect a number of potential and current LX200 owners that may be discouraged at trying astrophotography. The LX200 is quite able to handle long exposures without modification. Arguably, the LX200 has the best price/performance ratio of any scope and mount available today.

- You can use smaller rings with an ETX, but the larger the rings, the more range you'll have. rings will also come in handy if you upsize to a C5 guider, which would be a more suitable guide scope for a 10" working With either, you should guide with at least a 2x barlow but a 3x would be better.

- The LX200 telescopes are specially designed for astrophotography. These telescopes provide excellent tracking and are very stable – making astrophotography fairly easy with a little experience. Lately, with the cost of DSLR camera’s dropping, these cameras are commonly being used on the LX200’s for astrophotography.
