    She persuaded her father to provide the capital and rented an inexpensive studio in Victoria, working under the title ‘Madame Yevonde – Portrait Photographer’. She understood the time was right to create a more contemporary approach to studio portraiture, with a variety of poses and backgrounds and the business flourished despite rival competition.

    British photographer Yevonde Middleton, better known as Madame Yevonde, was born in 1893 to a wealthy English family. She grew up to be one of England’s best regarded portrait photographers, pioneering the use of colour photography in the mid-twentieth century. At just twenty-one, Madame Yevonde set up her own studio on Victoria Street in London.

    Madame Yevonde was a London-based photographer of portraits and still life throughout much of the twentieth century. She was a pioneer in photographic techniques, experimenting with solarisation and associated particularly with the Vivex colour process, which she utilised to great effect in the 1930s.

    Madame Yevonde Yevonde Philone Middleton ( 1893–1975) was a studio photography who used the professional name Madame Yevonde. She produced a remarkable series of colour photographs using the Vivex process from c..1930-1939 when the process was discontinued. Production never resumed after the second world war.

    Madame Yevonde was the first female photographer who captured colored portraits in the 1930s. Yevonde worked with famous photographer Lallie Charles, and at the age of 21, she opened her studio, and in 1921 she moved to larger premises at 10 Victoria Street.

The works in the exhibition were produced from the original glass plate negatives and Vivex prints and included some of her hitherto unseen work.     Over the years, Madame Yevonde continued to photograph commercially; in 1964, at the age of 71 she was commissioned to photograph the country of Ethiopia. She also continued to exhibit her work in group and retrospective shows. In 1971, she offered her life's work to the National Portrait Gallery in London.
