From the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s, Miroslav Tichý photographed the women of Kyjov, who were often unaware they were being documented. He photographed from waist level, concealing the camera underneath a shaggy sweater, or from a distance, through chain-link fences and across streets, using a telephoto lens he developed using found material.

Miroslav Tichý | International Center of Photography

    https://www.icp.org/exhibitions/miroslav-tich%c3%bd
This is the first American museum exhibition devoted to the work of the reclusive and mysterious Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý. Now over eighty years old, Tichý is a stubbornly eccentric artist, known as much for his makeshift cardboard cameras as for his haunting and distorted images of women and landscapes, many of them taken surreptitiously.

Despite his camera’s crude optics—the lenses were cut from Plexiglas polished with sandpaper, toothpaste, and ashes—and skewed framing, the resulting images are formally complex, reflective of Tichý’s early art training, and vaguely reminiscent of the …

Trained in academic painting, Tichy secretly engaged in photography only in 1970. Obsessive, if not fetishistic, he photographs women surreptitiously with the camera he built. His blurry photographs, sometimes enhanced with a pen border, are part of an immutable process, to which he adhered until the 1990s.

Miroslav Tichý was a photographer who from the 1960s until 1985 took thousands of pictures of women in his hometown of Kyjow, in the Czech Republic, where he was born in 1926, using homemade cameras constructed of cardboard tubes, tin cans and other at-hand materials.

Miroslav Tichý - Artists - Howard Greenberg Gallery

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and for a time seemed on the path to becoming an esteemed painter in the modernist mode. In the late 1960s he began taking photographs, mostly of local women sunbathing, using equipment that he built himself. The cameras were crudely made of cardboard, bottle caps, and rubber bands.

Who was Miroslav Tichý? | Christie's

    https://www.christies.com/features/Miroslav-Tichy-6402-1.aspx
What did Miroslav Tichý photograph? From the 1950s to 1986, Tichý took thousands of surreptitious photographs in and around Kyjov, in the Czech Republic. With his wild hair and ragged clothes, locals viewed him as a harmless eccentric — but in many ways his art can be seen as a subversive act in response to a totalitarian regime.

Apart from studying law in Wroclaw, the Polish author Agnieszka Sejud also studied at the Institute of Creative Photography in Opava. Her training, therefore, is in photography, even though she presents herself more as a visual artist and activist in her work, often as a member of the art duo KWAS, which she forms with her ICP classmate Karolina …
