The other is in "AUTO" mode by taking the camera to a low light situation and the flash should automatically pop up. - A photographer should never ever use on camera flash for anything other than a snapshot and your cell phone should make perfectly good snapshots. Having your lens and your flash aimed at the subject from the same place produces terrible light modeling. Don't do it.

- If you want to have specific depth of field with flash, set the camera to Aperture priority mode, set aperture to f5.6 or f/8 etc. The automatic iTTL stuff will look after the flash. You don't really need a higher ISO with the flash unless you are set to TTL-BL (fill flash).

- Comparison is not entirely fair. The Nikon F was a professional camera. It's successor is a Nikon D3s. You cannot expect the same reliability from one of the cheapest all-plastic consumer models. To lower the price, something has to be compromised, like materials, build quality and quality control, or the D80 would cost the same as a D3s.
