Does N+1 Mean Push One Stop? | Photo.net Photography Forums

- Adams idea was to have very discreet control over how to get what you see in front of the camera to translate into a very specifc tone of gray of your choice. Push 1 just means that you shoot the film one full stop faster, and then try to develop so that the highlights remain under control, usually at the expense of shadow detail.

- I've personally shot 120 format Portra 800 at EI 1600 (a one-stop underexposure) and had the lab develop normally (as the local camera store can push everything except C-41!) and got usable results. I wouldn't recommend underexposing any more than that without the push to get the contrast boost.
What Is a “Stop” in Photography? - How-To Geek
- https://www.howtogeek.com/298652/what-is-a-stop-in-photography/
- One stop is equal to a halving (or a doubling) of the amount of light let into the camera by that factor. So for example, if you have the shutter speed on your camera set to 1/100th of a second, increasing your exposure by one stop would change the shutter speed to 1/50th of a second (letting twice as much light into the camera).
Pushing and Pulling Film - A Complete Guide from The Darkroom
- https://thedarkroom.com/pushing-and-pulling-film/
- The pushing or pulling process involves shooting and developing film at a different ISO than what the film is rated for. Let’s say you want to push your 400 ISO film 1 stop (+1), set your camera to 800 ISO, and shoot/meter the whole roll as 800 ISO. When the roll is finished, clearly mark the speed on the film canister.
Pushing and Pulling Film: Why and How? | The Photography …

- The film is pushed in camera by stops so pushing a 400 ISO film by one stop will make it 800 ISO. In the same vein, if you push 400 ISO film by two stops, will make it 1600 ISO. How Does Development Change? The main difference with pushing film is your development time will be longer than normal to compensate for less light hitting the film.
What is a "Stop" of Exposure in Photography?
- As with shutter speed, doubling the ISO number gives an increase of 1 stop, while halving gives it a decrease of 1 stop. For example, switching from ISO 100 to ISO 200 doubles the sensor's sensitivity, producing a 1 stop increase. Moving from ISO 800 to ISO 400 is a 1 stop decrease. Most cameras let you change ISO speed in increments of 1 stop.
