- With your 1.6 crop factor SL1, the longest shutter length will be 6 - 7 seconds, which is quite short for night photography. You also won't see all that much of the might sky with a 50mm x 1.6 = 90mm. You really need an ultra wide angle or even fish-eye to have some context for the Milky Way.
