- If you are looking to do both planetary and DSO's, and you only want one scope, then I would go with the SCT, and add a focal reducer. Using an F/6.3 reducer would get you to around 1700mm, which is doable (though not ideal), given great alignment, and well trained pec, and good guiding. - In addition, you'll always have nice tight stars with the refractor, with the SCT your stars will be affected more by collimation, seeing conditions, field curvature and tube currents. As others have said, if you're mostly interested in planets, small galaxies and planetary nebula then the SCT could be the way to go but a 4" refractor will give you successful results much quicker.
Why a Refractor Telescope Is Your Best Option for …

- Setting up the Sky-Watcher Esprit 100 refractor telescope in the backyard. When choosing a refractor telescope for astrophotography, ensure that it is an apochromatic optical design, not an achromat. Also, ensure that the optical tube includes a robust, 10-1 speed focuser that can lock into position when needed.
Refractor vs SCT - Equipment (No astrophotography)

- I am in the process of getting into astrophotography with a telescope. Currently using a canon zoom lense (480 mm f/6.3 on crop camera). It appears that most experts recommend starting with a refractor of around 80mm (such as Orion 80 mm ED, 600mm f/7.5). I have also been looking at getting an SCT such as 6” Celestron (1500mm f/10).

- IME SCT's can offer "Refractor" views however the collimation has has to be near perfect and the SCT has to be fully acclimated. Unless one is living in the tropics the acclimation rarely happens, thus the Refractor shows the sharper Image. Newts are far closer to Refractors (for acclimation) than SCT's are. Best option IMO of to keep one of each!

- For example, refractors have 6 to 6 surfaces, SCT 4. Lens surfaces much be well polished and have excellent anti reflective coatings. Mirror surfaces must be polished very well. Small pits left from inadequate polishing result in flare and loss of contrast.

- You can find apo refractors in that range that don't cost an arm and a leg. They will still cost more (even twice or three times more in 6" range) than SCT. In 8" and above - apo refractors will be seriously expensive. For same aperture - they will provide more light gathering. SCT has two mirrors, central obstruction and corrector plate.

- The Orion ED66 CF Carbon Fiber Refractor Telescope is an ideal refractor for anyone who is on the go. If you want to easily grab a telescope for astrophotography while you’re out and about, then this compact scope is ideal. This telescope is made from carbon fiber. This not only makes it light, but it also makes it resistant to temperature changes.

- This article will walk you through the differences, pros and cons of refractor and reflector telescope for astrophotography. Refractor telescopes rely on lenses and use the principle of refraction of light to enlarge an object and project the image on the eyepiece. Reflection law of glass is used in the construction of Reflector Telescope.
