- Very little of what I know to be true in Yellowstone, is true in Sax-Zim Bog. For one thing, people are allowed to hunt in many of the adjoining areas, putting the lives of the wolves, foxes, coyotes, weasels, pine martens, deer, mink, and other animals in jeopardy. One photographer knew someone who had trapped three pine martens.

- Sax-Zim Bog is uniquely suited to the needs of many birds migrating from the far north. Part of the Lake Superior watershed, the Important Bird Area is a perfect mix of giant black spruce and tamarack bogs, with hay fields and meadows leftover from failed attempts to drain the bogs and establish a farming foothold in the early 1900s.

- Sax-Zim Bog January 3-7, 2022. It had been several years since I ventured to Sax-Zim Bog in search of Great Gray Owls. My last 3-day visit was very unproductive and produced no sightings of the beautiful bird. My only successful sightings and photographs of this majestic bird occurred during a 2019 trip to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

- Located in Northern Minnesota, Sax Zim Bog is a prime destination for birding year round, but especially in winter. Many species from farther north come to this "southern" location. Owls are a favorite target here--alas! I only saw one, a distant Great Gray Owl.

Over 70 Great Grays and 42 Hawk Owls were counted on a single day in Sax-Zim in December 2004! Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Shrikes also come down from the arctic to spend the winter with us.

- Sax Zim Bog attracts a community of birders and photographers, who I found enjoy sharing their findings and knowledge with others. While waiting on a particular species to show up at a feeder or a favored tree you can overhear the conversations of others telling their stories about finding the coveted GGO or some rare or interesting find.
