- Japanese-born Soichi Sunami originally aspired to become a painter in the Western tradition. He moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1907 at age twenty-two, and for fifteen years he traveled around the Pacific Northwest working at odd jobs. In Seattle he began studying painting at the Seattle Art Club, where he also became skilled at photography.
