- NIKON D7100 + 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 35mm, ISO 2800, 1/60, f/4.5. Historically, Nikon has been using its 51-point Multi-CAM 3500 autofocus system only on high-end FX and DX DSLRs. Therefore, the only DX cameras that had this AF system were the Nikon D300/D300s, cameras specifically targeted for action and sports photography.

- One suggestion I would make with the 7100 is to use autofocus set to AF-C and not AF-A. When you are shooting fast action like football, soccer or basketball, the AF-A setting doesn't work well since the camera seems to take a slight amount of time to choose between AF-A and AF-S. For sports, you don't have time for the camera to hesitate.

- An old-school 80-200 f2.8 will become a 120-300 on your DX body. You'll need to be shooting at 1/250 or 1/500 so VR is not needed nor even suggested. Bump up the ISO on your 7100 to get those shutter speeds, change your WB white-balance to match your lighting using K temp adjustment (if night time under stadium lighting).
