- The Tamron 17-50 is meant to be a walk around lens on a crop body, with an adjusted range of about 28-80. If you want the same type of lens for FF the Tamron 28-75 2.8 is the one. And if you want a UWA the Tamron 17-35 2.8-4 is it. These are all fine lenses with comparable image quality and AF speed.

- Shooting wide open at f/2.8 on an APS-C sensor. Handling/Size/Weight. Tamron always surprised me in how they could make relatively equivalent lenses for less money as well as smaller size and lighter weight. The 17-50mm was no exception as compared to what Nikon had at the time, the 17-50 just made a lot of sense.

Tamron 17-50/2.8 vs kit lens. Worth the price difference?
- I don't own the Tamron 17-50. From what I have read it can need AF fine-tuning occasionally (on the camera body) but gives excellent results. I do have the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 which is extremely good. if the 17-50 is comparable it's definitely a step up from the kit lens and gives two extra stops at the long end. Best wishes
