- The photographer Thomas Annan (1829–1887) started out as an apprentice to a lithographic engraver in 1843. A precursor to photography, lithography was invented at the start of the nineteenth century as both social response and stimulus to the demand for cheap, mass reproduced images.

- Having begun his career as a lithographic writer and engraver on a local newspaper in Fife, Thomas Annan set up a studio as a professional photographer in 1855. He founded his own photographic printing works in Hamilton in 1859 and by 1862 had begun to establish a reputation for photographing works of art.

- Annan opened his first studio with his brother Robert in Glasgow in 1855 and made art reproductions, portraits and views. In 1866 the Glasgow City Improvement Trust hired him to photograph slums before they were torn down. In 1868 he produced two sets of 31 prints, then additional sets later.
