    The French inventor, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, invented the first permanent photograph in 1826. It was a breakthrough in the history of photography. As a result, he is credited with being the world’s foremost photographer who invented photography. Niepce used a camera obscura to capture an image and projected it onto a polished pewter sheet.

    Invented in France and one of the two photographic processes introduced to the public in early 1839, the daguerreotype is made by exposing a silver-coated copper plate to light and then treating it with chemicals to bring out the image. The heyday of the technique was the 1840s and 1850s, when it was used primarily for making portraits.

    Nicéphore Niépce, an amateur inventor living near Chalon-sur-Saône, a city 189 miles (304 km) southeast of Paris, was interested in lithography, a process in which drawings are copied or drawn by hand onto lithographic stone and then printed in ink. Not artistically trained, Niépce devised a method by which light could draw the pictures he needed.

    In the early 1800’s an Englishman called Thomas Wedgewood figured out a way to record the image that was being projected using a camera obscura. Using white leather or paper coated in silver nitrate (a white chemical which turns darker when exposed to light) he generated a black and white negative image.
