As pictured here, the nebula spans about 3/4 of a light year and the entire nebula spans about 1.25 light years. The nebula is about 900 light years from us and is lit up by Rigel, which is large, blue ...

- It's kind of surprising considering it's easy to find and is quite large. It fits nicely into a 200mmish field of view, which means you don't need super high-end equipment to capture it. “The Witch Head Nebula” just sounds like a sick ass heavy metal band. This is genuinely the first time ever I see the witch's head.

- The Witch Head Nebula. Canon EF 75-300mm Lens (130mm at F/6.3). This lens has a rather slow r-ratio compared to other, more expensive prime Canon EF lenses. It includes an autofocus feature (AF), which can be turned on or off on the side of the lens. For astrophotography purposes, the manual focus method should be used.

- Witch Head Nebula. Intense light streams from Rigel (bright star at right) across 40 light years of space to illuminate the Witch Head Nebula, then reflects another 775 light years to reach us. This nebula is very dim and is just barely above sky glow at a clear dark site. South is up in this image.
